How a player qualifies

Ranking every player who has appeared would put somebody who played eight minutes of one blowout and went two-for-two at the top of the shooting table. The number would be arithmetically correct and tell you nothing, so the NBA's own minimums are applied.

For the per-game categories a player must have appeared in 70% of his team's games — his own team's, because teams are several games apart this early in the season. For the percentage categories the gate is makes, not games: four-for-four is not a shooting percentage. The NBA's full-season minimums are 300 field goals, 125 free throws and 82 three-pointers made.

Both of those are full-season rules, so both are scaled here by how far the season has got. Teams have played between 6 and 9 games, so the bar is currently 5-7 games played, or 22-33 field goals, 10-14 free throws or 6-9 three-pointers made. That scaling is this site's arithmetic, not a table published by the NBA, so expect the cut-off to differ from an official in-season leaderboard by a game or a make either way.

One NBA rule is deliberately not implemented: a player below the games minimum can still be credited with the lead if his average would survive being divided by the minimum instead of by his own games. It decides a category about once a decade, and a half-right version of it would be wrong in a way you could not see from the table — the same reason the three-way tiebreakers are left alone on the standings and NBA Cup pages.

A traded player is measured against his current team's games played. The roster feed carries only the team he is on now, so for the handful of players who have moved, the denominator can be a game or two out.

Where these come from

Computed from the box scores of completed games, the same rows the player pages use, and rebuilt when the site rebuilds. They are not live: a game in progress is not in these tables until it finishes. Percentages are taken from summed makes and attempts, never by averaging per-game percentages, and a game a player did not appear in is not counted as a zero. See data sources.
